VIASPACE Press Release
BIOMASS POWER PLANT PROVIDER, DP CLEANTECH, ANNOUNCES FIRST ELECTRICITY AND STEAM PROJECT IN THAILAND
VIASPACE Giant King Grass Cited as Potential Alternative Fuel
IRVINE, Calif.-September 28, 2011-VIASPACE Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: VSPC - News), a clean energy company growing Giant KingTM Grass as a low-carbon, renewable biomass crop and its subsidiary VIASPACE Green Energy Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: VGREF), today reported that Biomass Power Plant provider DP CleanTech announced that it has been contracted to convert an ageing coal-fired power plant to operate on biomass. This conversion is being performed for TPK Ethanol of Thailand which is building a plant to convert cassava (tapioca) into 1,000,000 L of bioethanol per day. The bioethanol plant requires both electricity and steam from the biomass boiler. In the press release by DP CleanTech, wood waste is identified as the primary fuel source, and Giant King Grass is cited as an alternative. VIASPACE and DP CleanTech have previously signed a Memorandum of Understanding. TPK Ethanol has visited the VIASPACE Giant King Grass plantation in China. VIASPACE is in discussions with TPK Ethanol.
The DP CleanTech press release, which can be found on their website http://www.dpcleantech.com/medias/news/dp-cleantech-replace-coal-with-waste-wood-chips-and-eucalyptus-bark-in-thailand, states "Ongoing efforts by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) to diversify its power sources by using more coal and adopting nuclear have been met with resistance by environmentalists and communities. Egat are now researching IGCC technology, which turns coal into gas. However Egat deputy governor Somboon Arayaskul said that producing electricity from IGCC is about 50% more expensive than using fossil fuels. Feasibility studies into alternative technologies have revealed that coal to biomass conversions provide the relatively cheapest option for alternative sources of energy, and significantly reduce the environmental impact of existing coal power plants."
Jerome Le-Borgne, Sales Manager South East Asia said "This is a great project for DP CleanTech as it allows us to build our reference list in Thailand and prove ourselves in coal conversion projects. We believe Thailand has a major growth potential for biomass, largely thanks to the emerging government incentives. By providing this conversion service in addition to new build biomass plants we are establishing ourselves as the technological leaders for biomass to electricity."
