VIASPACE Press Release
Electric Bike Producer Buys VIASPACE Light Electric Vehicle Battery
09/22/2008
PASADENA, CA.-September 22, 2008-VIASPACE Inc. (OTCBB: VSPC), a company that commercializes proven space and defense technologies from NASA and the Department of Defense into hardware and software solutions, announced today that its Light Electric Vehicle (LEV) battery pack has been sold to 3rd Millennium Energy LLC of Orange, CA, a designer and manufacturer of electric bicycles, tricycles and other LEVs. The battery pack uses special cells produced by VIASPACE partner, Yoku of Hong Kong.
Until now, most eBike batteries have been made from lead-acid cells similar to those used to start automobiles. The VIASPACE Lithium Polymer batteries are four times lighter, nearly three times smaller, charge much faster, and have greater cycle life than lead-acid batteries. Britt Jackson, CEO of 3rd Millennium Energy stated, "We are very pleased with our in-house tests of the VIASPACE battery; they show that we can provide our eBike customers with a powerful boost while keeping the eBike light, good looking, and easy to handle." A single small VIASPACE battery pack can yield up to a 40-mile range, and a battery pack the size of the current lead acid battery can yield over 100 miles of range. The eBike can be simply recharged by plugging in to a standard electrical plug.
The first application for VIASPACE eBike batteries is 3rd Millennium Energy's advanced "Commuter Bike" which can be folded to be small enough to take on commuter trains and in cars. In this application, light weight and small size are critical. VIASPACE eBike batteries are also under test for use in both mountain and street eBikes at 3rd Millennium Energy and other customers.
Carl Kukkonen, CEO of VIASPACE, stated, "We believe that eBikes and other light electric vehicles will see rapid adoption. VIASPACE is pleased that we have been selected as a battery supplier by 3rd Millennium Energy in this growing market segment. Our battery packs can be used in a wide range of energy storage applications including electric boats, robotic vehicles, uninterruptible power supplies and nighttime storage for solar energy. We provide our customers with safe, high performance batteries at a strongly competitive price, as a complement to our other green energy products, including fuel cell technology and fuel cell and battery instrumentation. All of this is part of our expanded focus on a broadened range of clean, renewable energy solutions."
