VIASPACE Press Release
VIASPACE CEO Presents at Singapore Fuel Cell Conference
04/14/2008
PASADENA, CA and Singapore - April 14, 2008-VIASPACE Inc. (OTCBB: VSPC), announced today that Dr. Carl Kukkonen, CEO of both VIASPACE and its subsidiary
Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Corporation (DMFCC), presented an invited paper at the Fuel
Cell Technologies and Innovations 2008 Conference to be held at Temasek Polytechnic in Singapore on April 14, 2008. The conference brought together company executives, government officials and policy makers, scientists and engineers, and academicians from around Asia to exchange ideas and information on the advancement of fuel cell technology and to also discuss ways and means to engage Singapore in the utilization and commercialization of fuel cells.
Dr. Kukkonen's presentation focused on direct methanol fuel cells and disposable methanol fuel cartridges for portable electronic devices. Methanol, an easily transported liquid, is made from natural gas (methane). Disposable fuel cartridges are the consumable product in the fuel cell business. A single fuel cartridge may be able to power a mobile phone for three weeks of standby time and 700 minutes of talk time. A single cartridge for a notebook computer can provide five to 10 hours of operation away from an electrical plug. Fuel cell powered devices can be instantly recharged by simply replacing the disposable fuel cartridge thus yielding indefinite operating time and freedom from the
grid.
Dr. Kukkonen commented in advance of his presentation, "No one will buy a fuel cell powered notebook computer or cell phone unless fuel cartridges are readily available.
Similarly, no company will bring out fuel cartridges unless fuel cell powered products are in the marketplace. Obviously the products must be coordinated." The presentation addressed progress in developing and meeting safety standards, and obtaining regulatory approval to carry fuel cells and cartridges on airplanes. Global manufacturing and distribution issues were also discussed. Kukkonen continued, "It is important to remember that the portable electronics OEM sells the fuel cell powered device; however, the consumer that buys the notebook computer is the person that buys cartridges in the aftermarket. He is our customer."
