VIASPACE, Tibbar Energy progress on St. Croix biogas power plant
VIASPACE Inc. and Tibbar Energy announced that its 7-MW Giant King Grass (GKG) biogas power plant, in St. Croix, has received approval from the Public Services Commission (PSC) for a 25 year power purchase agreement with the Virgin Island Water and Power Authority (WAPA). The PSC also approved an Interconnection Agreement to the power grid.
"We expect our Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor to start construction this Fall. Tibbar will be using local contractors to build the project under Layne Christensen, our EPC," said Tania Tomyn, Tibbar Energy CEO. "The project will have a significant impact on the USVI by providing the first base load renewable energy project that is independent of imported fossil fuels."
In addition, Tibbar Energy also received approval from the U.S. Virgin Islands Government Employee's Pension Fund (GERS) for a $15 million dollar loan.
Previously, Tibbar Energy was issued a Virgin Island Department on Planning and Natural Resources' Division of Coastal Zone Management (CMZ) final permit for construction. The permit has been submitted to the Department on Planning and Natural Resources and is expected to be finalized soon.
